Contemporary abstract artist, Debora Grace Muñoz, has long been fascinated by cosmic phenomena, an interest that was revived and expanded through her recent body of work which was created for her MFA thesis exhibition, DESMADRE.
As an undergraduate BFA student, Muñoz developed a reputation for painting abstracted, imagined storm clouds inspired by the skies she observed throughout Southern California. They became images rooted in her own experiences of cloud-watching but reshaped into atmospheric environments not found in nature. As she pursued her MFA, Muñoz's practice continued to move beyond the familiar terrestrial sky and towards the expansion of space beyond Earth's atmosphere.
Debora Grace Muñoz's work is informed not only by scientific and astronomical observation but also by lived experience through the use of symbolism to search for meaning amidst otherwise overwhelming forces. Her imagined celestial skyscapes become spaces through which she considers the relationship between beauty and destruction. Muñoz's work explores the tension between the wonder and devastation that fills the cosmos.
