Show Statement

The discoveries that lie within cosmic imagery reveal how the turbulence that drives cosmic phenomena does not overrule the beauty that exists in tandem with tumult. Our recognition of beauty amidst lethal forces highlights the human desire to interpret meaning out of what we cannot fully understand. Here, beauty is not a product of ideal circumstances but an experience that can be excavated even in raging uncertainty. Destruction is not as a singular occurrence but as a persistent condition that embodies instability. When faced with discomfort, we become drawn towards beauty and perceived meanings in an effort to extract purpose from grief, fear, and helplessness. While disorienting experiences are inevitable here on Earth, such disruption is also scattered throughout our universe. Through the creation of imagined skyscapes, my work employs abstraction as a method by which the mind can comprehend the overwhelming forces that surround us in the cosmos, examining the tension of the sublime nature of creation. The distortion of reimagining the skyscape coupled with embedded personal mythology builds imagery that makes the work a reflection of internal engagement rather than pure observation. Abstract skyscapes are where external observations of celestial phenomena intertwine with internal, lived experience. Our enduring relationship with the study of the sky exemplifies how how we seek hope and resolution in the face of the chaotic unknown.
